Not all NBN connections are the same. Your connection type sets the ceiling on your speed, your reliability, and what upgrades you're even eligible for.

The NBN Connection Cheat Sheet: What Type Do You Have?
NBN Co runs on a mix of technologies. Depending on where you are, you could be on fibre, copper, coaxial cable, wireless, or satellite. Here's what each one means for you.
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP): The True Fibre Experience
How it works: Fibre-optic cable runs directly from NBN's local distribution hub into your home. No copper is used as it's fibre end to end. A technician installs a Network Termination Device (NTD) where the fibre line enters the building.
The technology: Fibre carries data as light signals through glass strands thinner than a human hair. That means high data capacity with almost no signal loss.
Why it matters: FTTP supports speeds up to 2000 Mbps, with no signal interference and no distance degradation. It's the most reliable option on the network, and the lowest maintenance.

Fibre to the Node (FTTN): Fibre Meets the Old Copper Network
How it works: Fibre runs from the exchange to a street cabinet, or "node," which typically services dozens of homes and businesses. From there, your existing copper telephone line carries the connection into your home, sometimes over a kilometre.
The technology: FTTN uses VDSL2 (Very High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2) to push data over copper. It's an upgrade on ADSL, but it inherits copper's limitations:
- Signal loss over distance. The further you are from the node, the slower your speed.
- Interference. Copper is sensitive to moisture, corrosion, and electrical noise.
- Shared bandwidth. Multiple homes on the same node can affect each other's performance.
Why it matters: FTTN sped up the national rollout by reusing existing copper, but it's also why speeds are inconsistent for households further from the node. The good news: FTTN areas are now among the first being upgraded to FTTP under the Fibre Connect Program.

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): Fibre to Your Driveway
How it works: Fibre runs to a distribution point unit (DPU), usually in a pit 10 to 40 metres from your home. From there, your existing copper lead-in cable connects the DPU to your premises.
The technology: FTTC also runs VDSL2 over copper, but the short distance keeps signal loss minimal. The DPU converts the optical signal into an electrical one your modem can use.
The catch: The remaining copper stretch is the weak point. Corroded or poorly maintained copper can still cause dropouts. That said, FTTC premises are among the easiest to upgrade to FTTP, since most of the fibre work is already in place.
In short: fibre to the driveway, copper to the door.
Fibre to the Building (FTTB): Fibre for Apartments
How it works: Used in apartment blocks and office buildings. Fibre runs to a communications room in the basement, then existing internal wiring, often copper, distributes the connection to each unit.
The technology: FTTB also relies on VDSL2, similar to FTTN, but the copper run inside the building is short, so performance is usually solid.
The challenge: Older buildings can have dated internal wiring that limits speed. If that's the case, ask your strata or building manager about upgrading the internal cabling.
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC): Fibre Plus Cable TV Lines
How it works: HFC uses fibre to a local node, then coaxial cable, the same cable originally used for pay TV, for the final stretch into your home.
The technology: Coaxial cable is more shielded than copper, supporting higher frequencies and larger data loads. NBN's HFC network uses DOCSIS 3.1 for high-speed transmission.
Why it's still relevant: HFC supports speeds up to 1000 Mbps and is common in metro areas. Because it's a shared medium, speeds can drop during peak hours.
Fixed Wireless and Satellite: Connecting Regional and Remote Australia
Where cables can't reach, NBN uses wireless or satellite instead.
Fixed Wireless: Data is transmitted from a nearby tower to an outdoor antenna at your property. Speeds up to 250 Mbps depending on distance and signal conditions.
Satellite (Sky Muster): Data travels to and from a geostationary satellite. Slower due to the latency involved in the round trip to space.
Why Copper Still Lingers in the Network
If fibre is better, why isn't everyone on FTTP? Cost and time. When the NBN moved to a multi-technology mix, the decision was made to reuse existing Telstra copper and Foxtel cable networks to cut costs and speed up the rollout. That's why FTTN, FTTC, and HFC still depend on older infrastructure, and why some homes are stuck with copper's limitations: electrical interference, signal loss over distance, and performance that varies street by street. Copper was built for voice calls, not high-speed broadband. Fibre is the direction the network is heading, and that rollout is happening now.
Why Your Connection Type Actually Matters
If your speed doesn't match your plan, the connection type is usually the reason, not the provider. Here's what it affects:
- Speed potential. Every technology has a ceiling. FTTP supports up to 1 Gbps; FTTN might struggle to reach a tenth of that, depending on copper quality and distance.
- Reliability. Fibre is consistent. Copper and coax fluctuate.
- Latency. Matters for video calls and heavy streaming. Fibre means lower lag.
- Upgrade options. Some connection types can be upgraded, such as FTTN to FTTP.
- Plan compatibility. A faster plan won't help if your line can't handle it.

How to Check What Type of NBN Connection You Have
Three ways to find out:
Option 1: Use the NBN Address Checker. Visit NBN Co's address checker, enter your address, and you'll see your connection type and fibre upgrade eligibility.

Option 3: Check Your Equipment.
- Fibre box inside: likely FTTP.
- Old phone line jack: probably FTTN or FTTC.

How to Change or Upgrade Your NBN Connection Type
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility. Use the Fibre Upgrade Checker to see if your address qualifies for FTTP. Many FTTN and FTTC homes now qualify under the government-backed Fibre Connect program.
Step 2: Talk to Your Provider. If you're eligible, your provider handles the upgrade request. Most fibre upgrades are a free install.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose my NBN connection type when signing up? Usually not. It's determined by the infrastructure already at your address, unless your area is eligible for a fibre upgrade.
My plan says 100 Mbps, but I'm only getting 70. Why? Your connection type, and distance from the node, sets a limit on achievable speed. Wi-Fi interference and network congestion can also play a part.
Will switching plans improve my speed? Not necessarily. Moving from a 50 Mbps to a 100 Mbps plan won't help if your FTTN line tops out at 60 Mbps. Check your infrastructure before you upgrade your plan.
Is fibre really that much better? Yes. Faster, more reliable, and built for future speed increases.
How do I know if my area will get fibre soon? Track rollout updates on the NBN Fibre Connect map. If your area is in the current stage, NBN Co will contact you directly.
What about apartment buildings on FTTB? Old internal copper wiring can limit performance. Ask your strata or building manager about upgrading the internal cabling; it's often a straightforward fix with a real payoff.
